Keng Yaik shoots down Tenaga’s request for tariff hike
By Tamimi Omar
Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s hopes of getting a tariff hike in the near term suffered a setback after Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said the former’s efficiency levels were still lacking. “I understand the strain on Tenaga’s financial exposure, (but) I cannot recommend an increase in tariff at the moment. It is not acceptable as efficiency is not there (and), wastefulness is there,” he said.
Speaking to reporters after officiating the National Convention for Energy Professionals in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 15, Dr Lim said there were still issues such as frequent power disruptions, late power installation and quality of power supplied that needed to be addressed before the tariff hike could be considered. Citing the issue of a new factory in Melaka not being supplied with power as an example, he said the report he received from Tenaga showed that the fault lay with regional managers who were not consumer-centric. Thank you, Mr. Lim. At this time, please think of the people who are also suffering. TNB have earn much profits year in, year out, they can suck in some of the price hikes this round.
